The Justice Department has recognized that citizens were being unfairly charged for defending themselves or their homes, prompting a new self-defense policy. Effective immediately, citizens now have the right to protect themselves and their dwellings in life-threatening situations when no other options are available. Law enforcement is required to thoroughly investigate such incidents and determine whether the actions were legally justified, returning any seized property if appropriate. While this new precedent empowers citizens, it also emphasizes personal responsibility and warns against abusing the right to self-defense.
